I've heard that creatine is bad for your heart. Is this true and what are the effects of creatine?
Creatine is also touted as a supplement that increases muscle strength and bulk. This bulking effect, if it exists, comes from increased binding of water attached to creatine molecules in the muscle cells. Strength gains, if they occur, are more likely due to facilitation of more rapid recovery from bouts of vigorous weight training, thereby allowing the athlete to produce more work which does improve strength over time. Creatine is relatively free of significant side effects. Anecdotal reports attribute gastrointestinal side effects, like diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bloating, decreased appetite to it. There have also been reports of increased incidence of muscle cramping, muscle strains and tendon injuries in creatine users, but these reports are by no means confirmed. There is no good evidence that creatine use causes kidney, liver or cardiac (heart) problems, although those concerns have been expressed by many people based on anecdotal reports.
